Speaker’s Profile & Event Description
New arms for Fighting the “Big C” – Hadron Therapy: A Major Innovation in the Treatment of Cancer

Prof Habrand is specialized in Proton & Hadron Therapy. He is also specialized in Paediatric radiation oncology. Practitioner and researcher for over 40 years in cancer treatments, he has won numerous laurels in academic as well as clinical domains. Thanks to his current and past positions and memberships in top echelon professional societies (the list is long!) both national as well as international, Prof Habrand is highly esteemed by his peers due to an impressive record.

He has travelled extensively to give lectures in renowned International Medical Conferences, in Europe & the USA.

Particle therapy is a form of external beam radiotherapy using beams of energetic protons, neutrons, or positive ions for cancer treatment. The most common type of particle therapy as of 2012 is proton therapy. Although a photon, used in x-ray or gamma ray therapy, can also be considered a particle, photon therapy is not considered here. Additionally, electron therapy is generally put into its own category. Because of this, particle therapy is sometimes referred to, more correctly, as hadron therapy (that is, therapy with particles that are made of quarks).

The above text (source: Wikipedia) defining Hadron therapy may obviously be beyond comprehension for most of us. But in recent years, Hadron Therapy has become a treatment of choice for cancers. We are, therefore, honored to have Prof. Halbrand reveal to us some of the mysteries of this killer disease and how he is employing this innovative technique to save lives – and that, for us, IPA community, in layman’s language!
